Toddler floor beds are a great way to make your toddler feel at home in his or her room. If you’re like me, and want your toddler to still be comfortable and cozy while they sleep, then toddler floor beds might just be the answer. This post will go into detail about why toddler floor beds are beneficial for parents and toddlers alike!
What is a toddler floor bed?
A toddler floor bed is simply a bed for your toddler that is on the floor! It’s a toddler bed in which your toddler doesn’t have to climb up into it, instead they just crawl right in!
A toddler floor bed could be a mattress on the floor, or it could be a bed frame that’s very low to the ground (or even on the ground). Most importantly, it’s a bed that your toddler can get in and out of by themselves.
Why is it called a Montessori bed?
The Montessori philosophy of toddler education is to teach children independence, freedom within limits, and responsibility. Montessori schools often have toddler floor beds for nap time because it helps toddlers gain a sense of autonomy by being able to get into bed without assistance.
For parents who want to practice Montessori parenting, a floor bed is one of the first things they implement. It’s a great way to let your toddler get into bed by themselves, and start to experience some of the independence that comes with being a toddler.
What age can my toddler use a Montessori floor bed?
Montessori toddler floor beds are most beneficial when your toddler is between the ages of 18 months and 30 months. That’s a very important age range because toddlers at this age start to become mobile, but they’re not yet able to climb in and out of a traditional toddler bed on their own.
A child as young as one year old can successfully use a Montessori floor bed.

How to DIY a Toddler Floor Bed
The easiest way to DIY a toddler floor bed is to ditch the crib and put the crib mattress right on the floor.
If you want, you can build a simple bed frame to go around the crib mattress to help keep your toddler inside using basic construction lumber from your local hardware store.
We used simple 1 x 12 boards to create this simple square frame, and cut out two small slots in the sides for our toddler to get in and out. We added fabric store foam (covered in cotton) for comfort. And we also purchased a simple canopy to go with our Tangled theme!
The Bottom Line
A toddler floor bed is a great way to help your toddler learn how to sleep on their own without climbing into and out of their own bed. A toddler floor bed will give them some autonomy, independence, and responsibility as they grow up!
