The right swaddle can make all the difference in how long baby stays asleep, how often they wake up, and how much of a struggle it is to get them back to sleep. That’s why you don’t want to guess how many swaddles you need for your little one-you’re better off doing some research first!
How many swaddles do you actually need?
3 is the bare minimum for any given size (one to wear, one to wash, one to spare). If you’re planning on doing laundry every day, then three might be okay. But if your baby spits up a lot or has serious diaper blowouts that make clothing changes necessary more often, four to five is a better number for most babies.
What is swaddling?
Swaddling is how you recreate the environment in your womb. The tight swaddle mimics that secure feeling they knew all too well, and it can be incredibly soothing to them.
Wrap your baby tightly in in a receiving blanket or a wrap that’s specifically designed for swaddling. Your baby will feel safe and secure!
What are the benefits of swaddling?
Swaddling can help your baby fall asleep and stay asleep. It also decreases how often they wake up, which makes it easier for you to be able to put them back down when they do stir (and hopefully avoid that dreaded cycle of feeding-rocking-nursing all night long).
It’s a great tool for self soothing and something that mamas can do in the middle of the night with a minimum amount of effort and it’s how we help our babies feel safe and secure.
Why does swaddling work?
The tight swaddle mimics how they felt in the womb – secure and snuggled up. It’s how we recreate that feeling for them, it can be incredibly soothing to babies.
How many swaddles should you buy?
Ideally you should buy at least 3 of the current size, plus 2 of the next size up. Babies grow quickly, and you’ll soon outgrow the current size. You don’t want to be left without a swaddle to use!
Our favorite swaddle
We love the Zipadee Zip Wearable blanket. It’s comfy and cozy, and can be worn well into toddlerhood!
